Special Talk: UC Women's Initiative for Professional Development

Angelic Lucero, Accelerator Operator Specialist at the Berkeley Lab ALS, will give a virtual talk about her experience participating in The UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development (UC WI). UC WI is a unique, experiential, professional development program to support the success and advancement of mid-career, woman-identified professionals. It is open to all UC employees who support and are committed to this mission. The program brings together participants from every UC location. Participants represent faculty, academic personnel and staff, people managers and non-people managers. Applications for the 2023/24 program open February 27 and close March 24, 2023.

Heather Whiteman, PhD, is an expert in People Analytics, Talent Transformation, and the Future of Work. Whiteman has a master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology and a doctorate in Human Capital Management. Whiteman teaches People Analytics at UC Berkeley Haas and is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Data, Design & Delivery for a More Just World at the University of Washington Information School. Whiteman serves as a Future Workplace Executive Fellow, a board and technology advisor to organizations focused on people data for good and is a Fulbright Scholar to Guatemala for 2022-2023. She also serves as a U.S. representative for the International Organization for Standards (ISO) Technical Advisory Group TC 260 focused on the creation of global standards for human capital measurement, reporting and public disclosure.

Cradle to Commerce: Funding Opportunities for Lab Entrepreneurs

Reshma Singh will discuss the exciting new opportunities for LBNL staff interested in being funded to become entrepreneurs - either for their own inventions/technologies or in other team capacities - by participating in the new "Cradle to Commerce" program.  ETA's Singh and IPO's Shanshan Li won the largest DOE Technology Commercialization Fund award to date for their 4-lab, 3-incubator public-private collaborative that will develop infrastructure for clean energy technology commercialization. 

The program will provide funding support to help researchers and other staff get their feet wet and test the waters of entrepreneurship. Women interested in learning about entrepreneurship are especially encouraged to participate. In this talk, you will learn more about the program and how to participate. Visit C2C.lbl.gov

Reshma Singh is a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office. Concurrently, at Berkeley Lab, she leads the technology-to-market IMPEL program, the Cradle to Commerce program, and previously the Presidential U.S.-India Center for Building Energy Research and Development (CBERD). Singh brings over 10 years of experience advancing urban sustainability and cleantech innovation and working with complex international ecosystems in the United States, India, and Singapore. Reshma’s work lies at the intersection of the design and technology of smart buildings and cities, with a focus on energy, data analytics and UX, and IoT sensors and controls.

Women’s Interlaboratory Network Special Interlab Panel "No Woman Left Behind: Bridging the Gap"

Join us for a special event hosted by the Women’s Interlaboratory Network, a group of women from national labs across the DOE complex. 

In a world where women have historically faced polarizing life decisions and challenges that can result in career gaps, we will facilitate discussion and awareness such that no women are left behind. This event will feature panelists from 4 different national labs and their experiences navigating the challenges that come with breaks in their careers, caretaking, and other difficulties that women especially experience in feeling left behind. Our goal is to build solidarity and share stories, in order to gather information, share lessons learned, and provide support.

Trans Day of Visibility Special Speaker Event: Dr. Clara Barker, Oxford University

Friday, March 31, 2023, 12 - 1pm PT

Dr. Clara Barker, Ph.D., nuclear physicist at Oxford will give a brief overview of her scientific research making thin-film materials. She will also share her journey as a material scientist, from her perspective as a transgender person, including why she believes that making science more inclusive and equitable will benefit science overall. Among other roles and mentorship activity, she manages the Centre for Applied Superconductivity in the materials department at Oxford University and is the vice-chair of the LGBT+ advisory group at Oxford University and won the first diversity role-model award from the University in 2018.
